We always try to provide a good English
speaking Tibetan guide, however, as per
new regulation, guides are provided by
the guide association on a queue basis.
guide in Tibet do not get enough
exposure to English language, please do
not expect fluent and spontaneous
explanation from he/her. it is advisable
that your frequent questioning will
encourage him/her to explain well,
question by question.
Last minute checking:
Very importantly, on the last day,
before you leave your hotel for the
airport for the final departure, please
make sure that your guide has the
original visa copy with him and other
necessary travel documents (travel
permit for the group and alien's travel
permit for the individual) . this is all
to enable you to check out from the
immigration without any hassle.
There are strict controls over taking
pictures inside the monasteries but some
upon paying a fee (extra cost), a monk
may turn on the lights making the flash
less necessary. do not carry any dalai
lama pictures, free Tibet posters or
t-shirts, Tibetan flags or controversial
political magazine or books.
Money can be exchange at the bank of
china at zhangmu, shigatse and lhasa. In
case the banks are closed we suggest to
ask for a loan from the tour guide.
Casual wear and comfort walking shoes,
and a sleeping bag are the rule of
Tibet. be sure to bring warm clothing as
nights and early mornings can be quite
chilly to downright cold in winter
month. generally it is cold at night but
warm and sunny during the day. spring
comes at the end of April. summer
temperatures are pleasantly warm at
midday and drop dramatically in the
shades at the night. the rainy season
begins in midsummer and continues for
two months. autumn is clear with the
cold gradually increasing until
December. winter weather is always cold
with fierce winds and winter in western
Tibet and much colder and drier. so it
is advisable that chopstick, suntan
cream, sun hat and sun glasses are to be
carried with.
bring all the needed films, medicines,
cosmetics, personal toilet items etc
from home as these are difficult if not
impossible to obtain in Tibet. a small
first aid kit is also a good idea.
